My previous and current experience in Residence Life have brought me to a foundational level in this competency area. As a Residence Director, I practice various supervisory skills daily, and hold responsibility for the maintenance of my residence hall. Being on a smaller campus, it is easy to build close relationships with other departments, and I consistently maintain a strong relationship (or rather a working alliance) with our institution’s Public Safety office. This semester I assisted with hiring two new Resident Assistants for next year, and reflected on how this transition will affect the staff as a whole. As the only Residence Director for Medaille next year, my goal will be to advance my supervisory skills by focusing on professional development and utilizing current resources on campus. Furthering my proficiency would require more experience, and perhaps a higher administrative position in Residence Life, or any other student support service upon completing my Master’s degree next year.
