Leadership (LEAD)
Despite internal conflicts I've faced in solidifying a strong leadership identity, I believe my past and current experiences have challenged me to explore this competency area in-depth. I frequently listen to podcasts from experts in the field like Darren Hardy, Michael Hyatt, and Dave Ramsey to learn about innovative leadership skills and principles which I can implement in my own practice. Being involved at four different institutions this year has taught me to tailor my leadership style based on the campus culture and individuals I interact with. At Canisius, I learned the value of empowering a student while being in a leadership position, rather than simply encouraging them to follow advice or instructions. At Medaille, I realized the foundational element of my supervisory position was interdependence rather than independence. As a Residence Director I focus on professional development with my staff, equipping them with a skill set that will give them a meaningful and memorable leadership experience that will transcend beyond their college career. It is through these resources and experiences that my definition of “leader” and “leadership” is constantly evolving.
